It’s afternoon. The kids are in school. I just finished making, eating, and cleaning up my lunch. The dishes are stacked next to the sink. The dishwasher is full of clean dishes. There are clothes piled on my meditation mat in my closet. There’s dirty laundry in the baskets. And I’m just sitting here.
For a moment I thought about what I could be doing instead of sitting; the laundry, the dishes, cleaning up my room, going for a walk, etc. And I almost feel kind of guilty for not doing any of the things.
And then the little voice that sometimes shows up, quietly said to me, “Sitting IS doing something. You are resting. This is an active moment for you. Actively resting and replenishing your being. Let this moment be. Have this rest. This is exactly what you need and the other things will get done in time. There’s no need to rush around. Be still. Breathe. Accept this moment of quiet interlude.”
Isn’t it sometimes hard to accept a moment of rest? We are all so busy all of the time. I’m a mom of seven! There is ALWAYS, literally every minute of every day, something to do. And not being busy feels like a waste, or maybe a misuse of my time.
Nope. I am challenging that notion! It is not a misuse of time to sit and rest. It is necessary. It is essential. It is required for each of us to function to the highest capacity we are able. And even NOT to the highest if we don’t want to. Sometimes I half-ass things and that’s ok too. (Not the important things, but like my leg shaving or towel folding? I have totally half-assed those.) I don’t need to qualify for resting. It is simply something I GET to do.
You need rest too.
Because I love words, I looked up the word “active” at dictionary.com. It says active is: “being in a state of existence, progress, or motion.”
I CAN actively rest. I can BE rest. I can be in a state of restful “activity.” When I am resting I am allowing my body and mind to pause. The pauses in life prepare us for the busyness that we all get caught up in at times. The breathing helps ground and center our bodies. The stillness allows us to hear and see what we might normally miss because we’re moving too fast.
I am grateful for this pause today. I appreciate the couch I am sitting on, the “my mom made it” blanket covering my chilled arms, and the sun shining outside my windows. This moment is much appreciated and very needed. I am utterly embracing it.
May you find a moment to pause today. And as you allow the time to pass without moving so quickly, may you feel peace surround you. Embrace the interlude!
